The conversation

What we talked about.

This episode with DJ Krust is about the beginnings of a creative life: a family turntable, Wild Style, Bristol youth clubs, squat parties and the discovery that technology could turn raw energy into culture. Krust traces the path from Fresh 4 and Wishing on a Star through samplers, Cubase, Full Cycle and the early jungle scene, showing how a local DIY movement became a national sound.

This episode explores:

  • How did Wild Style and his mum's turntable give Krust the blueprint for a creative life?
  • Why did Bristol's early hip-hop scene feel like a way out rather than just a scene?
  • How did Fresh 4 go from youth-club battles and squat parties to Top of the Pops?
  • What changed when Krust walked into a professional studio and saw what production could be?
  • How did samplers, Cubase and dubplates reshape what bedroom producers could make?
  • How did Full Cycle help turn jungle from an underground sound into a national culture?
